Health Insurance FAQ

What’s the difference between group health insurance and individual health insurance?

Group health insurance is coverage offered by employers to their employees, with options available for small groups (1–50 employees) and large groups (50+ employees). It often includes additional benefits like dental, vision, life, and short-term disability insurance.
Individual health insurance, on the other hand, is purchased directly by individuals or families through the Health Insurance Marketplace (on-exchange) or from a private insurer (off-exchange). These plans can also include dental, vision, hearing, accident, and hospital indemnity coverage, offering flexibility for those without employer-sponsored benefits.

What’s the difference between small group and large group health insurance?

The key difference lies in the number of employees covered. A small group health plan covers between 1–50 employees, while a large group plan covers 51 or more employees. Larger employers often have more flexibility in plan design and pricing, while small business owners benefit from simplified plans and potential tax advantages for providing employee coverage.

What are supplemental group benefits?

Supplemental group benefits enhance your core health coverage by providing additional protection for you and your employees. These may include dental and vision plans, basic life and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, and short-term disability coverage. Supplemental benefits help fill gaps in traditional medical coverage and support overall employee well-being.

What’s the difference between Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans?

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans work alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B) to help pay for out-of-pocket costs such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. At Steiner & Granger, we offer Plans A, C, F, High F, G, High G, and N, available across multiple carriers — with household discounts offered by select providers.
Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans, on the other hand, are all-in-one alternatives to Original Medicare and may include prescription drug coverage (Part D) as well as extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing. These plans come in various formats, including PPO, HMO, and POS options, depending on your preferences and county of residence.

What’s the difference between Medicare Part C and Part D?

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) combines Parts A and B into one plan and may also include prescription coverage, along with extra benefits such as dental and vision.
Medicare Part D is a standalone prescription drug plan that can be added to Original Medicare or a Medicare Supplement plan. It helps cover the cost of prescription medications and ensures ongoing access to affordable prescriptions.

What is a short-term medical plan, and who is it for?

Short-term medical insurance is designed to provide temporary health coverage for individuals between major plans — for example, those waiting for employer coverage to start, recent graduates, or people in transition between jobs. These plans can help protect against unexpected medical expenses and give peace of mind during gaps in coverage.
